Mix hip-hop with American history and what do you get… Hamilton! The play, written by Tony Award winner, Lin-Manuel Miranda, has put a modern and creative spin on the biography of one of America’s Founding Fathers.
The production began off-Broadway at The Public Theater and then made its move to the big stage on Thursday.
The best part about the production is that Miranda deemed it necessary to have a diverse cast. As you may or may not know, the founders of America certainly were not people of color.
Miranda, who is Latino, plays the lead role of Alexander Hamilton. He takes the audience on a journey through the life of the young American leader by way of hip-hop inspired numbers. The majority of the show is communicated through rap lyrics.
Who would have ever thought that telling the story of America would actually be, dare I say it...cool?
Some notable names who supported the show on its opening night were Laverne Cox, Questlove, Busta Rhymes and Samuel L. Jackson.
With the extremely positive reception of the show, it looks like Hamilton could be on the same level as Broadway classics such as Wicked and Les Miserables.
