Idris Elba: 'Too Street' For 007?

Rumors have been floating around for a while now that British-bred actor, Idris Elba would be starring as the infamous Bond… James Bond.

Recently, author, Anthony Horowitz told the Daily Mail that he personally did not feel that Elba would be the right person to play the spy. He made sure to note that it had nothing to do with his race, but more so that Elba was “too street” for the role (whatever that meant). He said, "For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It’s not a color issue. I think he is probably a bit too 'street' for Bond. Is it a question of being suave? Yeah."

I’m not sure what work of Elba’s Horowitz may have seen (except for maybe his role as Stringer Bell on ‘The Wire’) that would be considered "street", but from what I see and hear he is one of the most debonair men I’ve seen lately. He has great looks, a charming personality through interviews, and let’s not forget that British accent that he can turn on and off. His roles in films such as “Takers” and the television series, “Luther”, show that he could certainly fulfill the role as Bond and give a phenomenal performance.

However, while that statement most certainly ruffled a few feathers, Horowitz also said,  "Idris Elba is a terrific actor, but I can think of other black actors who would do it better." He then suggested another Black British actor, Adrian Lester.

After social media erupted due to Horowitz’s not-so-well thought out remark, he came back with an apology. He said in the statement, “I admit it was a poor choice of word. I am mortified to have caused offence.” While the statement could easily rub people the wrong way, had he used a better choice of word, it definitely would have not reached this degree.

I haven’t seen any work of Adrian Lester’s to comment on his ability to embody the role (unless I just don't remember), but in my personal opinion Idris Elba definitely has what it takes. Bond is known for his sex appeal just as Elba is known for his. Bond brings the action just as Idris has shown in many of his previous roles. Bond attracts the ladies as does Idris. But most importantly, Idris would put any former Bond to shame in his three-piece suits.

As of now, Elba has bigger fish to fry as he will appear in the new ‘Star Trek’ film, but it would be a real treat to see him as 007. Will it happen? Only time will tell.
